Rainbow Pinery
Located within Genkai Quasi-National Park, Rainbow Pinery is regarded one of Japan’s three largest pine groves. Containing about one million black pines, the pinery stretches five kilometers from east to west and one kilometer from south to north. It is believed that, about 400 years ago, Hirotaka Terasawa, who was the first lord of the fief of Karatsu and the lord of Shima, had the trees planted for protection against the wind and the tide. The vista provided by the pinery was selected by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) as being one of the “top five landscapes nationwide to be preserved for the 21st century.”
